Lassi or Buttermilk

Description Lassi or Buttermilk is a popular and traditional south asian drink originating from the Punjab region. It is widely consumed in the Indian sub-continent to compliment spicy food. Traditional lassi is sometimes flavored with ground roasted cumin.

  1. 1/2 cup plain yoghurt
  2. 1 1/4 cups cold water
  3. 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  4. 1/4 tsp salt
  5. Ice (optional)
  6. Sugar (optional)
  7. Spices (optional)
Methods/steps
  1. Blend Yogurt and Water
  2. Add salt and cumin to taste
  3. For sweet lassi - add sugar to taste (no salt or cumin)
  4. For something strong - add species with little salt
Additional Tips

Lassi goes well with hot and spicy Indian food. Sweet lassi is a form of lassi flavored with sugar. In various parts of India, mango lassi is a cold drink consisting of sweetened kesar mango pulp mixed with yoghurt.

In Gujarat region, a drink like lassi is drunk but with more water and less yogurt - it is called Chaas. Salt and Jeera are normally added for taste.

A drink in Turkey is similar tasting to Lassi called Ayran. It is also made with yoghurt and water.
