Description Dal Makhani is a rich, hearty dish which is full of proteins. Black lentils are simmered in a creamy sauce of butter, onions, tomatoes, ginger-garlic and spices and liberally garnished with cream.

For Dal

175g/1 cup black grams, soaked 2 hrs
2 tbsp split Bengal gram lentils, husked
2 tsp ginger paste
2 tsp garlic paste
2 dry red chillies, soaked and ground
5 cups water
2 tbsp ghee
2 tsp salt or to taste

 

For seasoning
4 tomatoes, pureed
1 tbsp kasoori methi
¼ tsp nutmeg powder
½ tsp garam masala
2 tsp tomato ketchup
2-3 tbsp butter

 

For serving
½ cup milk
½ cup fresh cream

Methods/steps
  1. Pressure cook all ingredients for dal.
  2. After 2 whistles, keep pressure cooker on low heat for 2 minutes.
  3. Stir in all ingredients for seasoning.
  4. Simmer dal on medium heat for 30 minutes, stirring dal occasionally.
  5. At the time of serving, add milk mixed with fresh cream to dal.
  6. Bring dal to boil on low heat, stirring constantly for 2 minutes.
Additional Tips
Serve hot dal makhani with naan or tandoori chapatti. Can also be served with plain rice.
